6 Days Family Safari Adventure to Basecamp Maasai Mara and Wilderness Camp

 

 

Safari Overview:

A family safari in the heart of the Masai Mara is an experience with activities for the entire family, memories made together that will last a lifetime, and opportunities to learn and grow together. Our family safari itineraries are tailor-made to suit each family for the duration of their stay, taking into consideration the age of the children and any special interests or requests.

 

Day 1: Basecamp Masai Mara

Upon your arrival at Olkiombo Airstrip, you will be met by Skilled Maasai Guide ready to take you through your first game drive en-route to Basecamp Masai Mara Camp.

Cruise through the acacia-spotted savannah of the Masai Mara in a 4×4 vehicle. The park is famously known for its spectacular great wildebeest migration and is home to the Big Five; lion, elephant, rhino, cape buffalo and leopard. Watch out for herds of wildebeest, zebras, antelopes, and other game animals.

Arrive for lunch at Basecamp Masai Mara, located along the banks of the Talek River, the natural border to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Later on, you will have time to unpack and settled in as you explore your surroundings – our tents have wonderful features and you can even have an outdoor shower which is a truly unique bush experience.

Excitement will be quite high with your first-afternoon game drive of approximately 3-4 hours and you are sure to have some of the best wildlife sightings that Masai Mara National Reserve has to offer.

Upon returning to the camp, dinner will be served followed by story sharing and Stargazing around the fireplace which is an experience your family will always remember.

Day 2: Basecamp Masai Mara

Rise early for the first-morning game drive in Masai Mara National Reserve. Snacks, tea, and coffee will be ready before you embark on your game drive. Your knowledgeable Masai guide will take you on an unforgettable safari. Enjoy driving across the vast Mara Plains and keep your eyes open, for anything is possible in the wilderness! Spot lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard and cheetah. Watch out for the abundance zebra, impala, wildebeest, grant's gazelle, eland, topi and giraffe grazing side by side.

Later, head back to camp where breakfast awaits you. The rest of the morning is at leisure.

Basecamp Masai Mara has a children's club, Young Explorers Club that conducts various kids' activities. Your children can join their naturalist Masai guide on a Wildlife Tracking Adventure within the camp. It is the perfect time to learn about the flora and fauna, surrounding the camp and children have the opportunity to learn how to identify animals by simply looking at the animal droppings, bone formation, or animal footprints.

At midday lunch will be served before a lazy afternoon siesta or family fun time.

The afternoon game drive includes a stop for Sundowners which is something your children will always remember. Return to camp for a three-course dinner, followed by story sharing and Masai cultural dancing around the fireplace.

When you are ready, retire to your tent and be lulled to sleep by the sounds of the savannah.

Day 3: Basecamp Masai Mara

After having breakfast you will set out for a Camp walk adventure. During your walk, you will be introduced to some of the operational elements that have made Basecamp a leading pioneer in responsible tourism. Your Camp Walk includes a visit to the Basecamp Maasai Brand workshop, one of their capacity-building projects that employ 118 women. While you are making your camp tour, your children can be left at the workshop to learn how to bead traditional Maasai bracelets and necklaces with the help of the Maasai ladies which can take home as a souvenir.

End your camp tour with an optional Tree Planting Session, just like the Obama Family. At midday a freshly prepared lunch will be served underneath the trees overlooking the Maasai Mara National Reserve.

During your afternoon at leisure, your children can engage in other camp activities like having an interactive session with our guides who will teach them bush survival skills. They will learn some of the Maasai's traditional livelihood techniques including how to craft a bow and arrow using local materials.

The afternoon game drive is another affair with an abundance of wildlife which will keep everyone entertained until you get back to the camp for dinner. Savour a delicious meal in the restaurant before falling asleep to the sounds of the African night.

Day 4: Wilderness Camp * Naboisho Conservancy

After breakfast prepared by our skilled chefs, you will accompany your guide and children to watch as they test their Maasai survival skills, by trying to throw a Maasai club or hunting using your bow and arrow that they had crafted the previous day for a prize. This will be followed by some relaxation or alternatively, you can arrange a Masai cultural visit, at an extra cost. During the visit to the Maasai village, you will get a chance to see the Maasai way of life.

Head back to camp for lunch after which you will gather your things and prepare to go to your next destination Wilderness Camp in Mara Naboisho. You will enjoy a game drive in the Naboisho Conservancy en-route to the camp.

The conservancy is estimated to be about 20,000 hectares (50,000 acres) of land leased directly from more than 500 Maasai families with the aim of promoting Sustainable Tourism. Since its establishment over 5 years ago, it has become a haven for various wildlife species. Due to the strict policies governing the conservancy only a limited number of vehicles are permitted for game drives. This makes it an exclusive place to enjoy game drives. With an abundance of wildlife, you are likely to encounter big cats in their natural habitat.

You will reach Wilderness Camp in time for dinner. This camp pays tribute to the safaris of the early explorers and safari pioneers.

Enjoy a Three Course Bush Dinner and spend the beautiful night immersed in a wealth of African culture; there will be traditional Masai dance, music, and storytelling here, in the heart of the African bush. When you are ready you will retire to your tent.

Day 5: Wilderness Camp * Naboisho Conservancy

Awake at dawn for an early morning game drive. Your guide will take you through the savanna in search for great predators and perhaps even the lion cubs. On the plains watch out for the enormous herds of grazing animals, plus the elusive cheetah and leopard hiding amidst acacia boughs.

Later, enjoy a bush breakfast at leisure as you take in the breathtaking views of the Mara plains. Continue exploring the bush in pursuit of plain game that thrive in the conservancy.

Arrive at the camp, you may wish to relax in your comfortable room as you wait for lunch. Enjoy a 3-course lunch and have the rest of the day is at leisure. Choose either to go on a short camp walk or another evening game drive then complete your perfect African evening with a wonderful meal under the African stars.

Day 6: Nairobi

This is the last day of your family safari in the Mara Naboisho Conservancy!

After an morning game viewing the herds of grazing animals, plus the elusive cheetah and leopard hiding amidst acacia boughs, head back to camp and enjoy a breakfast. After breakfast, head to your room to pack up as you get ready to say your goodbyes to the African Bush.

At mid-day you will have lunch and say your goodbyes. Depart for Nairobi with a game drive en-route to the Naboisho Air Strip in time for your scheduled 4pm flight.

This is the perfect departure time for international connections or for continuing your African adventure by the coast.
