Game drives during Kenya’s dry season offer excellent wildlife viewing and clearer landscapes

Choosing the best time to visit Kenya safari destinations can make a significant difference in your overall experience. While Kenya offers exceptional wildlife viewing year round, certain months provide better visibility, migration activity and weather conditions.

Understanding seasonal patterns helps you plan a safari that matches your expectations.Whether you want dramatic wildlife action, fewer crowds or better travel value.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Kenya Safari Parks?

For most travelers, the best time to visit Kenya safari regions is during the dry seasons:

  • January to March
  • July to October (Crowded Animal Sightings especially in the Maasai Mara)

During these months:

  • Vegetation is thinner
  • Wildlife gathers around water sources
  • Game viewing is easier but not guaranteed
  • Most Roads are more accessible

The period from July to October also coincides with the Great Migration in the Masai Mara. However a River Crossing is never guaranteed. You might spend several days in the Mara and never get to experience one or you can get lucky and see it on your first day attempt.

Month-by-Month Kenya Safari Guide

January – March (Dry Season, Excellent Wildlife Viewing)

  • Warm, dry weather
  • Clear skies
  • Excellent predator sightings
  • Ideal for photography

This is one of the best times to visit Kenya safari destinations like Amboseli, Ol Pejeta, Samburu, Buffalo Springs, Meru just to mention a few. Please not that due to everchanging global weather conditions, you might experience some rainfall in February and March.

April – June (Green Season, Fewer Crowds)

  • Occasional heavy rains
  • Lush landscapes
  • Lower safari prices
  • Fewer tourists

While wildlife viewing may require more patience, this season offers better value and dramatic scenery.

April to June marks the peak and gradual end of Kenya’s long rains season. April and May typically see the heaviest rainfall (around 130–160mm in April and 117–130mm in May), before conditions begin to improve in June. During these months, central, western and coastal regions often experience frequent showers, transforming the landscapes into lush, vibrant green scenery. While rain can affect road conditions alot and game drive schedules, this season offers dramatic skies, fewer crowds and excellent value for travelers seeking a quieter safari experience. However the quality of game drive experience is low!

July – October (Peak Season & Great Migration)

Wildebeest crossing the Mara River during the Great Migration season in Kenya’s Masai Mara
  • Prime migration viewing in Masai Mara
  • River crossings
  • High concentration of wildlife
  • Peak pricing and higher visitor numbers

The Great Migration is incredible. But Kenya is endless.

And the most meaningful stories often happen away from the spotlight.

Whether you want a peaceful escape, a powerful adventure, a cultural connection, or a deeply personal journey into nature, there are countless ways to explore Kenya beyond the Migration.

And each one has the potential to change you.

If witnessing the Great Migration is your priority, this is the best time to visit Kenya safari parks. A lot of guests confuse Great Migration and River Crossing. Those two are different experiences. You may experience the Migration but not see the River Crossing. All guests want to see the River Crossing of the Wildebeest and related animals however this is not guaranteed!

Also note that safari vehicle traffic is at its highest during this time leading to over crowding at premium wildlife sightings of Big Cats. Accommodation fascilities and all other related safari services at their highest prices.

You have to book atleast a year and half in advance in order to increase your chance to secure accommodation at all properties in all the parks during this period. Last minute safari booking requests are not recommend. You will most likely be dissapointed.

November – December (Short Rains, Shoulder Season)

  • Moderate pricing

This is an underrated time to travel if you prefer fewer crowds. We at Expedition Kenya Safari highly recommend this period.
